You’ve probably never heard of him, but if you’ve seen any cartoon or animation in the last five decades, you’ve probably heard Frank Welker more times than you’ll think without realizing it.
From Fred Jones in the Scooby Doo franchise to HERBIE in The Fantastic New Four , Socrates in The Adventures of Virtue and most recently Megatron in Transformers: The Last Knight All of these animated characters have their own unique voice that can also be used to wake them up can recognize. However, each of them received their voice from Frank Welker, who has shared his many voices with thousands of characters over the years and is considered one of the greatest voice actors ever.
Who is Frank Welker, the famous voice actor?
Regarded in some circles as the king of voices, Frank Welker is an American voice actor who has lent his voice to hundreds of characters. He was born Franklin Wendell Welker on March 12, 1946 in Denver, Colorado, USA.
He studied theater at Santa Monica College in California. Ever since he was a little kid he could pick any voice or sound and distort it just to make people laugh.
He capitalized on this and started his voice acting career with a laundry detergent commercial followed by a dog food commercial for friskies. When he saw how good he was, the girlfriend of the dog food ad maker told him about the audition for Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! in which he attended. He initially auditioned for the role of the title character but got Fred Jones while Don Messick landed the role of Scooby-Doo in the Hanna-Barbera cartoon.
In the following years he lent his voice to various performances in animation, for example for various characters in Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels (1977 to 1980), various voices in The Smurfs (1981 to 1989), Brian in Inspector Gadget (1983 to 1985), various voices for The Transformers (1984 to 1987) and Curious George in Curious George (2006 to 2015).
In feature films, he acted for various characters in The Transformers Movie (1986) and The Chipmunk Adventures (1987). He also did for Tokka and Rahzar in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Mystery of the Mud (1991) and Galvatron in Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014).
