He was the first of three sons to an American mother, Grace Gamble (née Atkinson), and a Danish father, Viggo Peter Mortensen Sr. Growing up, his family moved through a number of European and South American countries, most notably Argentina. As a result, he achieved a level of fluency in Spanish.
His parents divorced when he was 11 years old and as a result he, his mother and younger brothers all returned to New York.
