Tobias Menzies has built his career in the UK entertainment industry for over two decades with experience in theatre, television and film. The English stage, television and film actor has amassed an impressive CV over the years. His works include Casino royale (2006), Underworld: Blood Wars (2016), Rome (2005-2007), Game of Thrones (2013-2016), Outlander (2014-2017), for which he played a dual role and for the he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.
Tobias Menzies was born on March 7, 1974 in North London, England. His surname is Scottish and was originally pronounced Mingis. Menzies grew up playing tennis and would have turned pro if acting hadn’t happened to him. He was also an expert swordsman. Despite not following his first love, he still relaxes after work by playing tennis. The young lad had many activities to keep him busy through childhood. Nonetheless, his journey into the world of acting began in his teenage years. His interest in acting was sparked after frequent visits to theatrical productions with his mother. Acting ultimately proved to be a publication he initially failed to find.
He attended Perry Court Rudolf Steiner School in Canterbury, Kent and then Frensham Heights School near Farnham in Surrey at the same time as Jim Sturgess. He later enrolled in Stratford-upon-Avon College’s year-out acting course in 1993-94, where he trained in the Steiner system, which involved daily movement, singing and musical instruments. He then went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he met and became friends with Sally Hawkins. He studied acting and graduated in 1998 with a BA. Menzies also worked for the British improv comedy company Spontaneity Shop and was thus ready to start his career.
His career began in some of the most popular series on British television and in no time he became a popular crowd pleaser. Some of his earliest work includes Foyle’s War (2002), Midsomer Murders (2000), Accident (1998-2000) and the feature film The Low Down (2000), in which he had a starring role.
He also portrayed Keith in the 2005 film, A Very Social Secretary , directed by Jon Jones, and from 2005 to 2007 he starred as Marcus Junius Brutus in the HBO/BBC historical drama series Rome . It was his role in Rome that made him known to international audiences. He appeared in the 2006 reboot of the James Bond film franchise, Casino royale in 2007 as Villiers the ITV film adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Persuasion as William Elliot and in Atonement alongside Sairose Ronan and Kiera Knightley and in Channel 4’s dramatization of Belsen’s Relief Broadcast on October 15th.
From 2014 to 2017 he co-starred in the TV series, Outlander in a dual role; as Frank Randall, a 20th-century historian and Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall, his brutal 18th-century ancestor, for which he received a Golden Globe Award nomination and won the 2015 EWwy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
His recent on-screen credits include Underworld: Blood Wars (2016), The Terror (2018), Carmilla (2018), King Lear (2018) as the Duke of Cornwall starring Anthony Hopkins and seasons 3 and 4 from Netflix ‘s The Crown , opposite Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, with whom he starred in The Night Manager (2016), starring Helena Bonham Carter as the Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret.
In addition to his work on screen, Tobias Menzies has also worked extensively on stage to create an impressive resume. His credits are in such works as The History Boys at the Royal National Theatre, The Three Sisters at the Playhouse Theater for which he was nominated for an Ian Charleson Award, The Cherry Orchard at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield, The Children’s Lesson with Elizabeth Moss and the title role in Rupert Goold’s Hamlet production at the Royal Theater in Northampton, for which he received favorable reviews.

The Outlander actor is the first son of Gillian(née Simpson), English teacher of literature and drama, and Peter Menzies, BBC radio producer. His only sibling is his younger brother Luke, who is a lawyer. Her parents divorced when Tobias was just 6 years old.
Tobias Menzies is known to have private personal life. As such, he has had some rumors and speculation about his sexuality, particularly after portraying sadistic gay rapist Jack Randall in Outlander. Being gay doesn’t come naturally to the British actor. He once had an affair with his co-star Kristen Scott Thomas in 2005. That might serve to establish his preference, right?
