On April 30, 1947 in Camberwell, London;Adelaide and Walter William Grantham welcomed their child Leslie Michael Grantham into the world. He spent most of his childhood in the town where he was born and played netball while in high school. At the age of eighteen in 1965, Grantham joined the British Army.

A year after enlisting in the army, Grantham killed a taxi driver; a man named Felix Reese. He planned to steal it and a fight ensued. Grantham shot him in the head, killing Reese. This murder took place in Germany. Grantham claimed he was unaware that the loaded gun had been loaded and that the blow to Reese’s head was unintentional; the murder would have been ruled a manslaughter, had the jury believed the testimony. The case came to court in 1967 and he was tried for murder, convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. His sentence was served in the British penal system, regardless of whether he had committed the crime and had been convicted in Germany.

As a result of his actions and eventual imprisonment, he was discharged from the military. Grantham was released in 1977 after serving ten years of his sentence. While in prison, he performed in a few plays, and T.
