Steven Culp – biography, family, facts about the actor

Steven Culp is an American award-winning actor and philanthropist who has appeared in a number of very popular films and television shows. Steve is also a loving husband and caring father of a son and daughter. He has been in the entertainment industry since 1982 and has become a notable Hollywood veteran.

Steven Culp – biography

Steven Culp, also spelled Stephen, was born Steven Bradley Culp was born on December 3, 1955 in La Jolla, San Diego, California, United States of America. Steven was born into a middle-class family. His father, Bryan Harvey, was a naval officer and his mother, Mary-Ann Joseph. His biological parents divorced when Steven was very young, and his father moved to Virginia from San Diego with his two sisters.

Steven’s mother, Mary-Ann, later married a naval officer, John Raymond Grabinsky, as did his father. He also has two half-sisters – Kathryn Harvey and Shelly Grabinsky. Unfortunately, on New Year’s Day 2006, Steven’s half-sister, Kathryn Harvey, was brutally murdered at her home by some unknown assailants. Kathryn’s two daughters – Stella and Ruby – were murdered along with her husband Bryan on the same day.

Steven graduated from First Colonial High School in Virginia, where he was voted “Best Talented” student. He was then admitted to the College of William and Mary, graduating in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. On the advice of his professors at the college, he continued his studies in the UK at the University of Exeter. Not yet finished with his academic career, he enrolled for his master’s degree at Brandeis University in Massachusetts, USA.


Steven has appeared in 18 feature films to date and he has appeared in well over 70 television series; all in a career spanning nearly four decades. He began his career as Tom Nelson in the TV series Another World in 1982. He has also starred in very popular TV series JAG (Special Agent Clayton Webb), The Orville as Wilks, Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Parker and the Popular Desperate Housewives as Rex Van de Kamp.

Culp also starred in highly popular films such as The Last Word where he played the role of Sam Seaman, Captain America: The Winter Soldier , Star Trek Nemesis , and Jason Goes to Hell where he portrayed the character, Robert Campbell. Steven received two Screen Actors Guild awards for Best Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in 2005 and 2006.


Steven Culp’s previous relationships have not been revealed to the public, but as of today he is happily married. Sometime in 1987, while filming on the set of “ Gore Vidal’s Lincoln ” in Richmond, Virginia in the United States, he was introduced to Barbara Ayers, who was one of the costume designers on the set. They became friends and began dating shortly after they first met.

A few years later, Steven proposed to Barbara, and she accepted his proposal. They finally married on September 29, 1990. They have been happily married ever since and have managed to remain scandal-free. Due to the nature of their busy careers, Steven and Barbara chose not to have children until their very busy schedule allowed them to focus fully on their family and children.

On October 6, 2001, they had their first children – a set of twins named Joseph Raymond (son) and Katherine Bradford (daughter). The couple is mostly private and are rarely seen together.

Frequent broken noses

Steven Culp broke his nose multiple times on set. While filming an episode of J.AG ‘, the script called for Admiral Chegwidden (played by John Jackson) to deliver an imaginative punch to Steven and knock him to the ground; But Jackson went a little far when he delivered a real punch to Culp that broke his nose.

He also suffered a broken nose on the set of The Sisters It was so bad he had to have surgery to fix his nose. Sometime in 1991, a robber approached Steven and Barbara in Los Angeles and his nose was again the target.

He provides financial support to the weSPARK Cancer Support Center and the Bryan and Kathryn Harvey Family Memorial Endowment Fund.


When Steven is not on set, he enjoys playing the guitar, spending time with his wife and children, writing fiction, and riding his bike to keep fit.
