The history of America’s cinema is incomplete without mentioning legendary filmmaker, director and producer Stanley Kubrick. Spanning his career from 1951 to his death in 1999, he is considered one of the most influential filmmakers ever to live with cross-genre work. He is known for many exceptional works including The Killing and many others that changed something or more about cinematography as it is today.

Stanley Kubrick Biography

Sometime on July 26, 1928 at Lying-InStanley Kubrick was born to Jacob Leonard Kubrick (Jack), a physician, and Sadie Gertrude Kubrick, in Manhattan, New York City. The Austrian-Jewish, Romanian-Jewish and Polish-Jewish filmmaker grew up as the older of two children with Barbara Kubrick as his younger sister.

It was at Public School 3 in the Bronx that he began his education before later transferring to Public School 90. In 1945 he graduated from William Howard Taft High School with very bad grades and had little hope of continuing his education.

Although he was credited with more than one male average, he had almost always recorded poor school performance, which contributed to his disappointing grades. Much later, he would reveal that he had always hated the American education system, believing it had fallen short in stimulating critical thinking and student interest.

Stanley Kubrick had always been interested in becoming a filmmaker. On his thirteenth birthday, his father gave him a camera, which made him fall in love with photography and saw him as his school’s official photographer while he was still in high school. After his education he worked as a photographer for some time and also earned a bit of chess.

In 1951, with the help and encouragement of his friend Alexander Singer, he began producing short films and documentaries. He taught himself how to produce and directed a documentary called Day of the Fight It was about Irish-American middleweight boxer Walter Cartier. This brought him into the limelight and launched his career.

With many other short films and feature films to come, he later met producer James B. Harris, with whom he founded Harris-Kubrick Pictures Corporation in 1955. In the years that followed, he adapted many novels into films, including Lionel White’s novel Clean Break which he made into the 1956 film, The Killing

In 1968 he released 2001: A Space Odyssey, a film that Stanley Kubrick took five years to develop. The landmark feature film is considered one of the greatest films ever made. In the 1970s and 1980s he worked on various horror films, including The Exorcist (1973) and Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977).

As early as 1961 he left the United States for Britain, where he continued to work due to his disdain for Hollywood, concern about crime in America and meddling in film production.

wife and daughter

Stanley Kubrick became a family man when he was just 19, and married Toba Metz, a woman he met in high school. Unfortunately, the marriage ended in divorce in 1951, just three years later. The next year he began living with Ruth Sobotka – a dancer, theater designer and actress who later became his wife in 1955.

The marriage wasn’t meant to be forever as the two would end the union two years after they tied the knot and that’s when Kubrick would meet German actress Christiane Harlan. She became his third wife in 1958 and they remained together until his death in 1999.

Harlan had a daughter from a previousrelationship, but together they had two daughters – Anya Renata and Vivian Vanessa. His first daughter was born in 1959 and lived until 2009 when she died, while the second, Vivian, was born in 1960. She is also a filmmaker like her father and a composer.
