Roman Polanski biography

It was as Rajmund Roman Thierry Polański that the actor was born on August 18, 1933 in Paris, France to Bula and Ryszard Polański, both of whom were agnostics. His family was originally called Liebling, but was renamed Polański by his Jewish father from Poland. His father worked as a painter and sculptor.

Three years after his birth, his family left France for Poland, where he grew up with his older sister, Annette, who was born to his mother from her previous marriage. Three years after they moved, Poland invaded in 1939 and the city of Kraków, where he lived with his family, was taken over by the Germans.

He survived World War II and was reunited with his father, who was made a German prisoner. His mother was killed after being taken to Auschwitz. Fortunately, Annette survived the concentration camp and returned to France after the war, never returning to Poland.

His father remarried in 1946 to a woman Polanski disliked, namely Wanda Zajączkowska. By 1984, the family would witness another tragic event when Wanda was diagnosed with cancer.

Ever since he was a child of 4, Roman Polanski has always been fascinated by cinema. He always cherished the times when his parents took him there, and then during the war, when he was in the Kraków ghetto, he found a way to watch the Germans’ newsreel.

After being attracted to Sir Carol Reed’s 1979 film, Outsiders , he decided it was what he wanted to do and so he later attended the National Film School in Łódź, where he graduated in 1959. He began acting in films in the 1950s and by the mid-1950s he had already started directing. He appeared in Pokolenie ( One Generation ) in 1954 and directed Rowers ( Bicycle ) in 1955.

In 1962 he directed his film, Nóż w wodzie which earned an Oscar nomination. By 1968 he won the award with Rosemary’s Baby . In Chinatown in 1974 he received 11 nominations and 1 win. Tess (1979) received 6 Oscar nominations and won 3. Recent films include La Vénus à la fourrure ( Venus in Furs ) in 2013 and then D’après une histoire vraie ( Based on a true story) in 2017.

The legendary director was arrested in 1977 and was accused of drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl. He would plead slightly less guilty after a plea deal, but it later emerged that the judge chose not to honor the deal and was willing to throw Polanski to serve 50 years behind bars. Shortly before his sentencing, he fled America for France, where he is also a citizen. So he couldn’t be deported. He continues to live there with his family while continuing to make films.
