The multi-faceted entertainer was born MelvinJames Kaminsky on June 28, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were Kate and James Kaminsky. Because of her heritage, Mel grew up in a Jewish household alongside his three older brothers, Lenny, Irving, and Bernie. The family suffered tragedy when their father, James, died of kidney disease. Mel was just two years old at the time.

For his high school education, he attended Abraham Lincoln High School. He was there for just a year before transferring to Eastern District High School and then Brooklyn College, where he earned a degree in psychology.

By the age of 14 he was pool tumbling and was being taught drums by American jazz drummer Buddy Rich. Two years later, at the age of 16, he began as a comedian.

After completing the Army General Classification Test, he was accepted into the Army Specialized Training Program. Mel Brooks served as a corporal in the United States Army during World War II. He joined the army in 1944 and was discharged in 1946.

After serving in the Army, he took up work as a musician at resorts and nightclubs in the Catskill Mountains. He also became a regular stand-up comedian at the same venues during this period.

His first television appearance was in 1949 when he was brought in to write developmental jokes and one-liners for NBC’s The Admiral Broadway Revue. He was hired by his friend Sid Ceasar and was paid $50 a week. The following year, Sid hired Mel again to co-write his new comedy series entitled Your Show of Shows. The series was a huge hit and ran in the early 1950s.

Mel also teamed with his fellow writers of Write Your Show of shows for Caesar’s Hour from 1954 to 1957. He then wrote his first Broadway musical entitled Shin Alley. In the late 1950s, Mel Brooks developed his own show, 2000 Year Old Man , with former co-writer Carl Reiner. In New York it developed into a cult hit. Mel Brooks and Reiner expanded the show and soon it made its way to Hollywood and became a mainstay on The Steve Allen Show.

In the 1960s, Brooks wrote for Broadway musicals, animated shorts, and television series. For his writing on All Americans, The Critics, and Get Smart, he won two Tony Awards, an Oscar and & Emmy Awards.

In 1968, Mel made his directorial debut with the film The Producers. The film was a huge hit, winning an Oscar and subsequently 12 Tonys for its musical adaptation. Four years later, the writer-director struck a deal with Warner Brothers, where he would rewrite the screenplay for The Blazing Saddles. By the end of the year, the film had earned the second-highest grossing in the industry for that year.

In 1974 he directed Young Frankenstein and had the likes of Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, and Marty Feldman on the set. The film was nominated for 2 Oscars and was the third-highest grosser of the year. During the 1970s he wrote and directed various projects such as When Things Were Rotten and High Fear.
