Max Casella was born on June 6, 1967 in Brooklyn, New York. His name at birth was Maximilian Deitch, but he later adopted his mother’s maiden name, “Casella”, as his professional name.

He has Russian Jewish ancestry on his father’s side and Italian ancestry on his mother’s side of the family. This actor grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he attended Cambridge Rindge and the Latin School.

As a teenager, Casella made his film debut on the children’s show Don’t Look Now! (1983) produced by WGBH-TV in Boston, Massachusetts. The show was canceled after only a few episodes and Casella did not pick up another screen appearance until the late ’80s, when he had reached adulthood.
