Karan Brar – Bio, Dude

The actor was born to his parents and Jasbinder Harinda Brar, both Native Americans in Redmond, Washington on January 18, 1999. Through his parents, he had an older sister, Sabreena. They both grew up in Bothell, Washington, where Karan attended Cedar Wood Elementary School and eventually took acting classes.

Unlike many child stars, Karan Brar didn’t grow up to be an actor, even though his father was one. In his early years he tried his hand at various sports, but nothing stuck. Eventually, at his father’s recommendation, he took acting classes and soon found that he was more comfortable on stage than he ever was when he played sports. By the time he was eight, he had hired an agent and began booking appearances for commercials.

His TV shows and commercials

The actor was just 11 years old when he took on the role of Chirag Gupta, a shy Indian middle school student, in Greg’s Diary (2010). The film grew into a trilogy in which he had to reprise the role in two sequels: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (2011) and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (2012). Brar was born in America and has an American accent. So for these films he had to work on perfecting his Indian dialect with the help of a dialect trainer.

His role as Ravi Ross was undoubtedly the biggest of his early career. While he portrayed the character of Ravi, a 10-year-old adopted Indian immigrant, in a few other Disney projects, it was his performance on Disney Jessie that really threw him into the spotlight. He was joined on the show by other Disney stars like Debby Ryan, Skai Jackson and Cameron Boyce.

A much older Karan also landed the role in 58 episodes of the Jessie spin-off, Bunk’d from 2015 to 2018.

While the actor is happy to be the first Indian for Disney to gain series regular status, as an actor he needs to be versatile and not stereotype himself into a specific role.

To diversify, Karan Brar has taken on other non-Indian roles. In 2013, he voiced four episodes of Disney Junior Sofia the First as the character, Prince Zandar. He also voiced the character Mason in an episode of Mr. Peabody & Sherman the following year. In 2016, he guest-starred as Omed, a drug dealer from Afghanistan, on an episode of NBC’s The Night Shift. He was also George in the Disney adventure comedy The Invisible Sister a year earlier.

More recently, the actor landed the role of a young newly hired cadet named Suresh at Universal Pictures. Pacific Rim; Uprising (2018). He has continued to land roles that have allowed him to break out of the Disney mold and build a career that reflects all of his strengths as an actor.
