Youth and education
Christian Kirksey was born to Patrice and Elmer Kirksey on August 31, 1992 in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Hazelwood East High School where he played for the football team under former NFL player Mike Jones who was the team’s coach. His abilities also meant he was part of the track and field team, competing in the relay and show jumping events.
In his high school year, Kirksey helped his team win the league title and earn honorable mention for the first team conference. The following year, he was named to the conference first team, although his team only made it to the playoffs this time around. For this year, Kirksey has recorded 163 tackles with nine dropped tackles, three sacks and two interceptions.
For his college career, Christian Kirksey enrolled at the University of Iowa. His first year proved to be a learning curve for the athlete as he only played 10 games, most of which were on special teams. His sophomore year was much better as he started all 13 games for his team, recording 62 tackles with five tackles for the loss, one sack, one interception, three breakups and two forced fumbles. The following year, Kirksey was named team captain as he recorded 95 tackles, 3.5 losses, two QB sacks, two interceptions, four fumble recoveries, two pass breakups and one forced fumble. As a senior, he recorded 104 tackles with 5 tackles for the loss and 2.5 sacks, two recovered fumbles and two forced fumbles,
At the end of the season, he earned an honorable All-Big Ten mention before accepting an invite to the 2014 Senior Bowl. Kirksey impressed scouts and team reps in practices and in the game itself. He then attended NFL competition where he only performed in the vertical jump, long jump, and bench drills. Ultimately, Christian Kirksey was selected for the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft with the 71st overall pick by the Cleveland Browns and the rest is history.

Before making a name for himself in football, Kirksey wanted to become a boxer. He was inspired by the sport after learning that his father and uncle were amateur boxers in their youth. His father, however, discouraged him and pushed him to become a footballer instead. Kirksey still has a thing for boxing and revealed he boxed and did MMA fights to stay in shape in the off season.
Another career in which the linebacker revealed that he would have pursued or would seek to have in the future after hanging up his boots is in music. Kirksey said that from the time he sang and played drums in his father’s church, he always wanted to get into it.
He further revealed that he intends to work with his gospel singer brother, as well as fellow Cleveland Brown’s Chad Thomas, who entered the league in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Thomas is also a music producer and rapper and is called Major Nine when he performs. He has notably worked with artists such as Rick Ross and Raphael Saadiq.
