Danny Willett Biography

On October 3, 1987, Danny was born as one of four siblings in Sheffield, Yorkshire. He apparently comes from a religious background with his father (Steve) serving as a curate in a Church of England. His mother, a Swedish-born woman named Elisabet, taught mathematics as a teacher.

Growing up was certainly fun for Danny who would like to practice his golf in the middle of a field of sheep where they played a par three course. Apparently, the practices have not gone unnoticed. Previously, Danny earned a golf scholarship and played two seasons at Jacksonville State University (JSU) in the United States.

He made the most of his time in college and became the 2006 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year. He also earned medalist honors at the 2007 OVC Championship, among other recognitions. In 2007 he won the English Amateur Championship as an amateur golfer. He then competed in the Walker Cup at Royal County Down the same year. In 2008, he won the number one amateur title in the world.

His career as a professional golfer

Also in 2008, Danny Willett won his Calling Card title for the 2009 season. This after he turned golf pro. The 2009 season was a success for the golfer who finished 58th in the first edition of Race to Dubai with eight top-10 finishes. The following year he challenged for the 2010 BMW PGA Championship by taking the first round lead. However, he fell behind and eventually finished fifth, taking home €190,800. The 2010 season ended with him ranked 23rd on the Order of Merit. This performance earned him his first place in the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking.

Unfortunately, his success waned somewhat in 2011, but while he finished the season with only a top-ten finish in 30 competitions, Danny was able to retain his tour status with a 91st place finish in the order of deserved.

His star shone again in 2012 with his first European Tour victory at the BMW International Open in Cologne. He was ranked 23rd on the final Order of Merit of the season after earning a runner-up finish at the Omega European Masters; a third place at the Maybank Malaysian Open in addition to three other top ten finishes.

From 2013 to 2015, Danny Willett carved out a place for himself as one of Europe’s leading players, scoring seven times in the top ten and closing 2015 in 25th place in The Race to Dubai.

His first major championship was won at the 2016 Masters Tournament at Augusta National. He won the award after shooting a five-under 67 inning; he took advantage of a Jordan Spieth meltdown. He became the first British player to win the Masters in 20 years after Nick Faldo won in 1996.

Also in the 2016 season, Danny recorded more success, earning his fourth European Tour victory at the Dubai Desert Classic, securing 2nd place at the 2016 Italian Open as well as a 3rd place at the BMW PGA Championship.

Unfortunately, he lost his PGA Tour privileges at the end of the 2016-17 season. This follows his failure to make the required fifteen starts.

Willett’s parents are Steve (father), a vicar in a Church of England, and Elisabet (mother), a Swedish-born woman who taught mathematics as a teacher. One of his brothers is also a teacher.

Danny’s wife is Nicole Harris who he married in 2013. They had their first child (son) in 2016. The baby arrived in time to motivate him to win the 2016 Masters. The family resides in Rotherham, Yorkshire.

In his Ryder Cup debut, Danny’s brother, PeterWillett caused controversy in a National Golfer’s Club article by inappropriately saying the American would have no chance of winning. Although he distances himself and apologizes for his brother’s comments, Danny later joins him after the contest.
