the biography

Cam Newton was born Cameron Jerrell Newton on May 11, 1989, in Atlanta, Georgia to his parents, Jackie and Cecil Newton Sr., a one-time NFL prospect who didn’t make the cut to the Dallas Cowboys in 1983 and the Buffalo Bills in 1984. He is also the brother to Cecil Newton Jr. who most recently played for the Baltimore Ravens.

As a child, Newton was very athletic and played almost all sports. He was the most talented in football, basketball and baseball, but around the age of 14, when he was about to start his high school career, he chose to focus on football the more likely to follow in the footsteps of his father and brother.

Newton attended Westlake High School in his hometown of Atlanta. He played a starring role for the school’s football team, the Westlake Lions, passing for 2,500 yards and 23 touchdowns and rushing for 638 yards and 9 touchdowns during his junior year. As a senior, he was getting national attention with colleges around the country offering him scholarships, but he committed to joining the University of Florida program.

In Florida, Newton played backup Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. Despite his strong results, Newton had a horrible time off the pitch. He was first sidelined with an ankle injury before being arrested for felony burglary, theft and obstruction of justice after being charged with stealing a laptop from a other student. This incident damaged his reputation and led to him being suspended from the team. The charges, however, were dropped after Newton completed a court-sanctioned pre-trial diversion program.

The following year, in 2009, three days before his team won the national championship, Newton announced that he would be transferring to Blinn College in Brenham, Texas. At Blinn, Newton resurrected his career and regained his reputation as a highly rated amateur quarterback. After one season, after leading the team to the NJCAA National Football Championship, he again transferred to a Division 1 football school, Auburn University.

At Auburn, Newton continued to dominate the game and led his school to the 2010 BCS National Championship. He broke several longstanding records along the way and was crowned Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and Player of the Year. AP of the Year for his efforts. Add that to the coveted Heisman Trophy, awarded annually to the most outstanding player in college football in the United States.

Newton shortly after dropping out of his senior year of college to declare for the 2011 NFL Draft. On April 28, 2011, he was selected with the Carolina Panthers’ first overall pick. His first season as a professional was one to remember as he was immediately named the Panthers’ starting quarterback. His performances during that year, being the first rookie to throw for over 400 yards in his career opener and 422+ passing yards, beating the legendary Peyton Manning, earned him the offensive rookie title of the year.

Cam Newton has since risen from strength to the NFL, becoming one of the league’s stars and one of its most dynamic players. In 2015, he was named NFL Most Valuable Player while guiding his team to Super Bowl 50, which ended in a loss to the Denver Broncos.

Newton is a dedicated Christian and an active participant in motivational speaking. In the spring of 2015, he obtained a degree in sociology.
